Every Body is beautiful but not everybody is

My lovely friend has this statuette in her massage studio (this is my rendition of it). It is understandable why my friend was attracted to her and wanted her for her space. This statue represents my friend. You see, my friend knows the fact that EVERY BODY is beautiful. Especially the female body. The way her neck holds her head just so and curves into her sloping shoulders and chest. The way her breasts offer nourishment and sex. The way they move and change throughout life. The way her soft abdomen lowers and rounds as the years pass. Those legs. The way they hold her up and, drop her to her knees and hold on tight. The arms. They can hug and pull close or push away. Every body holds the past in its cells, muscles, and nerves. And that beautiful soul holds the hope for the future.

While there is beauty in every body, not everybody is beautiful. In today’s world we have minute by minute, instantaneous proof that there is evil among people and ugliness that one person puts on to another. There are unspeakable atrocities happening out there that hold not a spark of beauty. It is disheartening and may make one feel like there is nothing but horror to be found. That’s when you need to look for the small things. Things that maybe never would have caught your attention were you not intentional about your hunt for good. After all, it only takes a spark to start a fire.

What if everybody, each of us, looked for beauty? What if each of us found a small sliver of hope in this world? Hope in the horror is what cancer patients are able to look for and find. As I look at my friend’s chunky, clunky, piece of brown clay that was molded to resemble a woman, I see a graceful yoga body on display, that represents my friend who herself is grace-filled. I can find beauty in the fact that my back/shoulders are on fire with pain but that my friend has magic hands and will calm my back and soothe my soul and I will leave her space knowing I have seen and felt beauty.

What can you find that gives you hope? I truly believe that God and goodness will prevail. If we can find it as we go through this life, not only is our life better, but when we pay that forward then EVERYBODY is better for it. Where can you find beauty on this Monday morning?
